The machine tap set for M 3 - 12 to DIN 371/376, made of HSS-E with TiCN coating, Form B, is designed for machine cutting of internal threads in the stated range. This version contains 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 3, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 4, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 5, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 6, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 8, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 10, 1 piece machine tap DIN 376 Form B M 12 and 1 piece plastic case for organised storage. The combination makes sense when several thread sizes with the same tool logic are to be kept organised and ready for use.
M identifies an ISO metric coarse thread to DIN 13. It is the standard for screw connections in European mechanical engineering, production and maintenance. Form B has a spiral point chamfer of 4 to 5 threads; it pushes the chips forward in the cutting direction and is intended for all through holes. The blue colour ring BLUE RING identifies machine taps for free-cutting, case-hardening and heat-treatable steels, unalloyed and alloyed steels up to 1,200 N/mm², stainless and acid-resistant steels with a high chromium-nickel content (V4A), malleable cast iron and aluminium alloys with more than 0.5 % silicon; conditionally suitable for stainless VA steels up to 850 N/mm², aluminium alloys below 0.5 % silicon, titanium alloys and thermosets. The TiCN coating (titanium carbonitride) is harder than TiN at around 3,000 HV and suits wear-resistant steels and abrasive materials; because its heat resistance is lower, intensive cooling is important. HSS-E is a cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel with higher hot hardness than plain HSS.
Application
- for machine internal thread cutting in the range M 3 - 12
- for through holes; Form B pushes the chips forward out of the hole in the cutting direction
- for free-cutting, case-hardening and heat-treatable steels, unalloyed and alloyed steels up to 1,200 N/mm², stainless and acid-resistant steels with a high chromium-nickel content (V4A), malleable cast iron and aluminium alloys with more than 0.5 % silicon in line with the colour ring recommendation
- for tool assignment with the standard or dimension reference DIN 371/376
- for this specific set configuration: 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 3, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 4, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 5, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 6, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 8, 1 piece machine tap DIN 371 Form B M 10, 1 piece machine tap DIN 376 Form B M 12 and 1 piece plastic case for organised storage
- Process: machine drive with a tapping chuck or collet holder; manual use only with secure guidance
- Use: thread cutting, re-tapping and thread cleaning depending on the condition of the thread
Note Before use, check thread system, size, material, hole type and core hole diameter so that tool and component match.
Benefits
- 7 machine taps are available as a matching size series M 3 - 12
- the BLUE RING colour ring makes the material assignment recognisable at a glance in the tool stock
- TiCN coating of around 3,000 HV increases wear resistance compared with uncoated and TiN-coated tools
- HSS-E is a cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel with higher hot hardness than plain HSS
- Form B pushes the chips forward and suits through holes
- the standard or dimension reference DIN 371/376 simplifies assignment and reordering of individual sizes
- the plastic case protects the tools and makes completeness checks easier
- Form B is not intended for blind holes; machine taps of Form C or C/35° RSP are the right choice there.
- The TiCN coating requires intensive cooling because its heat resistance is lower than that of TiN.
Step by step
- Select the tap by thread size and pitch and check standard, form and material suitability.
- Drill the core hole to the table diameter square to the surface and lightly countersink it.
- Clamp the tap without play in a tapping chuck or collet holder.
- Use a cutting fluid matched to the material; supply it generously with TiCN-coated tools.
- Enter the hole centrally at the cutting speed recommended for the material (colour ring table).
- Keep feed and speed synchronised or use a chuck with length compensation.
- Retract the tool in reverse and clean thread and tool of chips.
- Check the thread with a suitable thread gauge and return the tap to the case.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
- Which materials is the BLUE RING set intended for?
- The blue colour ring stands for free-cutting, case-hardening and heat-treatable steels, unalloyed and alloyed steels up to 1,200 N/mm², stainless and acid-resistant steels with a high chromium-nickel content (V4A), malleable cast iron and aluminium alloys with more than 0.5 % silicon; conditionally suitable for stainless VA steels up to 850 N/mm², aluminium alloys below 0.5 % silicon, titanium alloys and thermosets. The assignment with cutting speed and cutting fluid is given in the Technical information machine taps with coloured ring as PDF.
- Why does the set contain DIN 371/376?
- DIN 371 applies to machine taps with a reinforced shank, DIN 376 to the larger sizes with an overflow shank. In this set the sizes M 3 – M 10 are assigned to DIN 371 and M 12 to DIN 376.
- What does Form B mean?
- Form B has a spiral point chamfer of 4 to 5 threads; it pushes the chips forward in the cutting direction and is intended for all through holes.
- What does the TiCN coating do?
- The TiCN coating (titanium carbonitride) is harder than TiN at around 3,000 HV and suits wear-resistant steels and abrasive materials; because its heat resistance is lower, intensive cooling is important.
- Which cutting fluid is suitable?
- For steels a drilling oil emulsion or cutting oil with lubricity-increasing additives, for stainless and acid-resistant steels a highly activated thread cutting oil, for aluminium a thread cutting oil for non-ferrous metals or an emulsion. With TiCN-coated tools a generous supply is important.
- How do you check the finished thread?
- Clean the thread and check it with a thread gauge of tolerance ISO 2 / 6H or with the mating part. A documented check is advisable for safety-relevant parts.
- Can you reorder individual sizes?
- Yes, every tap included is available individually. The article numbers are listed in the scope of supply and lead directly to the single tool.
- Where can you find the machine tap range in the catalogue?
- The complete range is in the catalogue: VD 23 catalog as PDF
- Is there technical information on machine taps?
- Chamfer forms, hole types and material assignment are summarised here: Technical information machine taps as PDF
