Thread repair workshop kits: several sizes in one case
A single repair kit covers exactly one thread size. In the workshop you rarely know in advance which size will strip next. The workshop kits therefore gather the common sizes in one case, with STI taps, installation tools, tang breakers and a supply of wire thread inserts.
Which kit for which job?
Metric for general use
The VC80 and the version M 5 to M 12 cover the range where most repairs occur. The kit M 6 to M 10 is more compact. For work on the machine there is a separate version from M 5 to M 12.
For the vehicle workshop
The kits 6 to 14 x 1.25 are cut to spark plug threads and come in two versions. For oil drain plugs and lambda sensors there are dedicated kits under V-COIL automotive.
Inch threads
For American and British threads there are four kits, each from 1/4 to 1/2 inch: UNC, UNF, BSW and BSF. Which inch thread you are facing is decided by diameter, thread count and flank angle.
The procedure
Drill out, cut the tapped hole with the STI tap, screw in the insert with the installation tool, break off the drive tang. Thanks to the spring thread the result is often stronger than the original. Single sizes are under thread repair kits, refills under wire thread inserts, the tangless variant under V-COIL notch.
