Short machine taps: one tool instead of a set

Short machine taps cut the internal thread in a single pass and can be used by hand with a tap wrench as well as on the machine. They replace the two- or three-piece set wherever you need threads in steel up to medium strength, cast iron or non-ferrous metal quickly and without changing tools. VÖLKEL makes them to DIN 352, DIN 2181 and ISO 529 in HSS-G and HSSE for M, MF, G (BSP), NPT, NPTF, NPS, Rc, UNC, UNF, BSW, BA, PG and left-hand threads.

Choosing the right form

As with machine taps, the chamfer determines the application. Form D with a 4 to 5 thread chamfer is the universal version for through and blind holes and therefore the most common form in the range. Form A with 6 to 8 threads suits short through holes, form B with spiral point all through holes, form C with 2 to 3 threads blind holes. Versions with interrupted threads (B-AZ) reduce friction in tough materials.

When a short tap, when a set?

A short machine tap takes the entire cutting load with one tool. In easily machined materials and for moderate thread sizes that is the faster route. With hard materials, large diameters or when working by hand with little force, the hand tap set keeps the advantage because the forces are spread over several tools. On the machine, a spiral-fluted form C machine tap is the better choice for deep blind holes.

Special versions

The range also includes short taps for dart threads (2BA), for horseshoe stud threads and as HexTap bits with hexagon drive for the cordless drill. For repairing spark plug and oil drain threads the STI versions are under V-COIL automotive. The tapping drill size is in the tap drill table.
