Thread ring gauges for metric fine thread
A fine thread has a smaller pitch than the coarse thread at the same nominal diameter. It holds preload better, adjusts more finely and stays put where vibration would loosen a coarse thread; in return the thread root is shallower and less forgiving. A ring gauge checks an external thread on the same principle as a plug gauge checks an internal one: the go ring must run on, the no-go ring must not.
