Hexagon Die Nuts

Hexagon die nut sets for rethreading

A hexagon die nut is above all a restoring tool: it clears out crushed, rusted or paint-clogged external threads without removing the part. It is driven with an ordinary open-end or ring spanner. VÖLKEL carries three sets of die nuts in DIN design from HSS.

The three sets

  • 7-piece, metric: hexagon die nuts to DIN 382 in M 3, M 4, M 5, M 6, M 8, M 10 and M 12, in a metal case.
  • 5-piece, UNC: 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
  • 5-piece, UNF: 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

That covers the range where most external threads get damaged in service: bolts, studs, fittings, threaded rods.

Why hexagonal rather than round

A round die needs a die stock and room to turn. The hexagon works with the spanner you are carrying anyway and fits places where a die stock cannot reach. That makes it an assembly tool, while the round die remains the workshop tool for new threads.

Rethreading is not cutting new

The die nut follows the existing thread. A new external thread on a plain bolt is better cut with a round die and a guide from the threading tool holders, so that it starts square. How that works is in the articles cut external threads cleanly by hand using a die and perfect external threads with guides for round dies.

Further sets are under tap and die sets, lubricants under lubricants.
