V-COIL – Repair of Spark Plug Threads
Professional restoration of damaged spark plug threads in aluminum cylinder heads – fast, reliable, permanent.
Why V-COIL for Spark Plug Thread Repair?
Restore damaged spark plug threads safely without replacing the cylinder head – ideal for workshops, engine builders and demanding DIY users.
Permanent Thread Repair
Creates a new high-strength stainless-steel thread in the existing spark plug seat – stronger than the original aluminum thread.
No Cylinder Head Replacement
Repair instead of replacing the entire head – saves time, material cost and avoids engine removal in many cases.
Special Spark Plug Tap
Two-stage spark plug tap removes the damaged thread and cuts the new receiving thread in a single operation – no pre-drilling required.
Automotive-Proven Solution
Designed for spark plug threads in aluminum cylinder heads, including modern engines with tight installation spaces.
Complete Repair Kit
Kit contains special spark plug tap, installation tool and matching inserts in different lengths for typical plug reach.
Helicoil Alternative
V-COIL thread inserts as a proven alternative to comparable spark plug repair systems – with VÖLKEL support and documentation.
How to Repair Spark Plug Threads with V-COIL
The V-COIL spark plug thread repair kit allows you to restore damaged M14 x 1.25 threads in aluminum cylinder heads in just a few defined steps.
The principle is simple: the special spark plug tap removes the old damaged thread and cuts the new larger receiving thread in one operation. A stainless-steel thread insert is then installed, providing a new spark plug thread with the original size, pitch and sealing properties.
Step 1 – Inspect & Prepare
Remove the spark plug and inspect the thread damage. Make sure the combustion chamber is protected against chips (for example by careful positioning of the piston and using compressed air or grease on the tap).
Check that the spark plug thread size and pitch (e.g. M14 x 1.25) match the repair kit and the special spark plug tap.
Step 2 – Cut the Receiving Thread
Using the special V-COIL spark plug tap, cut the new receiving thread into the damaged spark plug seat. With this special tap, pre-drilling is usually not necessary – the front section removes the old thread while the rear section cuts the new holding thread.
Drive the tap carefully and straight, typically using a socket and ratchet, until the full depth is reached.
Step 3 – Install the Thread Insert
Select the appropriate V-COIL spark plug insert length to match the original spark plug seat. Screw the insert onto the installation tool so that the tang sits correctly in the driving slot.
Screw the insert into the newly cut receiving thread until it is flush or slightly below the combustion chamber surface.
Step 4 – Break Off Tang & Reinstall Spark Plug
Remove the installation tool and break off the driving tang using the appropriate tang break tool. Make sure the tang is completely removed from the thread.
Finally, install the spark plug with the manufacturer’s specified torque. The new V-COIL thread now reliably holds and seals the plug.
Your Benefits in Spark Plug Thread Repair
From damaged threads to a reliable, long-lasting spark plug seat – in a single repair operation.
Time & Cost Savings
Prevent expensive cylinder head replacement and long downtime by repairing the thread directly in the vehicle.
High Strength & Heat Resistance
Stainless-steel inserts provide high load capacity and withstand combustion temperatures and sealing requirements.
OEM-Compatible Fit
The repaired thread has the same nominal size and pitch as the original spark plug, so standard plugs can be reused.
Secure Sealing
Proper insert length and seating ensure correct sealing of the spark plug against gas leakage.
Reliable for Aluminum Heads
Ideal for aluminum cylinder heads with worn or stripped spark plug threads – even after cross-threading or over-tightening.
Workshop-Ready Solution
Designed for professional use, but also suitable for experienced DIY enthusiasts with basic engine knowledge.
Typical Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
Typical questions from workshops and engine builders when repairing spark plug threads with V-COIL.
In many cases, the repair can be carried out with the cylinder head installed, especially on engines with good access to the spark plug. However, you must reliably prevent chips from entering the combustion chamber and follow engine manufacturer recommendations. For heavily contaminated or critical engines, removing the head may still be the safer option.
When using the special V-COIL spark plug tap, pre-drilling is usually not necessary. The front part of the tap removes the damaged thread while the rear part cuts the new receiving thread. Always follow the specific instructions of the kit and pay attention to correct alignment.
The insert length should correspond to the effective thread engagement of the spark plug. Choose a length that matches the original reach so that the sealing seat and electrode position remain correct. Insert must be flush or slightly below the combustion chamber surface – never protruding into the chamber.
Yes. The V-COIL spark plug thread repair restores the original nominal diameter and pitch (for example M14 x 1.25), so standard spark plugs of the same specification can be used again. Observe the recommended tightening torque of the engine or plug manufacturer.
The stainless-steel insert creates a high-strength, wear-resistant thread that is often more durable than the original aluminum thread. When installed correctly, the repair is designed for long-term use and multiple plug changes under normal service conditions.
