VÖLKEL Fluteless Machine Tap without oil groove DIN 371 Form C HSSE ISO3X (6GX)- M 3 x 0.5
The VÖLKEL fluteless machine tap is a precision tool designed for chipless production of internal threads. Unlike cutting taps, it forms the thread profile by cold deformation of the material, creating smooth, burr-free, and durable threads with excellent dimensional accuracy.
The absence of an oil groove increases the core strength and fracture resistance of the tap. This design allows higher cutting speeds and longer tool life. The ISO 3X (6GX) tolerance class provides a slight oversize during forming, compensating for the material’s elastic recovery to achieve a perfect fit once the thread is complete.
Made from premium HSSE (High-Speed Steel with Cobalt), this tool is ideal for non-ferrous metals with good ductility such as aluminium, brass, copper, bronze, and zinc alloys, including coated materials. The Form C geometry allows use in both through and blind holes, ensuring flexibility and precision in machine applications.
Advantages
- Longer tool life compared to cutting taps
- Higher permissible cutting speeds
- Consistent dimensional and profile accuracy
- High strength and reliability of formed threads
- Excellent fracture resistance
- No chip formation or swarf problems
Application
- Chipless forming of internal threads
- For non-ferrous metals with good ductility
- For materials with galvanic coatings or surface treatments
- ISO 3 (6G) tolerance: oversize of 0.02–0.04 mm
- For long-chipping non-ferrous materials (copper, brass, bronze, aluminium)
- Also suitable for zinc alloys
- For through and blind holes

FAQ
What is the difference between thread forming and cutting?
Cutting removes material to create a thread, while forming displaces material to shape it. Thread forming creates stronger, smoother threads and eliminates chip removal problems.
Why is the tap without oil groove stronger?
Without an oil groove, the tool retains more material in the shank, improving stability and reducing fracture risk under torque stress.
What does ISO3X (6GX) mean?
It indicates a slight oversize of the formed thread, which compensates for elastic recovery of the material. The result is a perfectly dimensioned finished thread.
Which materials are suitable?
Ideal for ductile non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, brass, copper, bronze and zinc alloys, and materials with surface coatings.
Can I use it for blind holes?
Yes, the Form C geometry is designed for both through and blind holes, provided proper lubrication is used.
