Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is a V-COIL Thread Repair Kit?

A: A V-COIL kit is used to repair damaged threads. The system consists of a twist drill, a special STI tap, an inserting tool, and the thread inserts. The supplied thread inserts are screwed into the pre-made thread to create a new, durable threaded hole.

Q: In what materials can I use V-COIL?

A: Thread repair with V-COIL is suitable for a variety of materials, especially those with low shear strength like aluminum, brass, magnesium, and plastics. V-COIL can also be used in steel and cast iron to reinforce threads.

Q: Why is the thread stronger after the repair?

A: The V-COIL thread insert distributes the load more evenly over the entire length of the thread turns. Since the insert is made of stainless steel, it has higher strength and hardness than the surrounding material. This makes the thread more resistant to wear and overload.

Q: Do I always have to break off the tang at the end?

A: Yes, the tang serves as a guide and assembly tool to screw in the thread insert. After the insert is fully installed, the tang must be broken off so that it does not block any other components and the thread is freely accessible. This is especially important for blind holes.

Q: What does "UNC No. 2 x 56" mean?

A: UNC stands for "Unified National Coarse," an American thread standard. "No. 2" describes the diameter of the screw (approx. 2.18 mm) and "56" the threads per inch (56 TPI). This standard is often used in precision mechanics.
