V-COIL notch repair kits without tang breaking
Seven kits for the common metric sizes from M 3 x 0.5 to M 12 x 1.75, each with wire thread inserts in 1.5 D. The difference to the classic kit lies in the insert: it has no drive tang but a notch. That removes the tang-breaking step, and no loose piece of metal is left in the component.
When that decides it
- Blind holes from which a broken tang could not be retrieved.
- Hydraulics, pneumatics and engines, where a loose part causes damage downstream.
- Series production, because one operation and its inspection disappear.
- Rework, since the insert can be unscrewed again with the same tool.
What is in the kit
An STI tap for the tapped hole, the installation tool that engages the notch, and a supply of tangless type SN inserts in 1.5 D. Drilling out and tapping run as with any V-COIL insert, only fitting is simpler.
Choosing the size
The kit follows the thread and pitch of the damaged thread, not the hole. Available are M 3 x 0.5, M 4 x 0.7, M 5 x 0.8, M 6 x 1.0, M 8 x 1.25, M 10 x 1.5 and M 12 x 1.75. In soft materials such as aluminium or magnesium a longer insert makes sense; what the figure means is explained in What 1.5 D means.
