Die sets for external threads
Seven compositions for external threads from M 3 to M 12, plus one set for left-hand threads and one for electrical conduit. The sets differ in the material of the dies and in whether guides are included that hold the tool square to the bolt.
The sets compared
- P.V.97, DIN design in HSS-G, M 3 to M 12. The standard for steel up to medium strength, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.
- P.V.98, 7 pieces in HSS-E, M 3 to M 12. For alloyed and stainless steels.
- P.V.96 VX, 7 pieces in HSS-E VAP, M 3 to M 12. The vapour-treated surface holds the lubricant film and prevents cold welding in long-chipping materials.
- P.V.92 in HSS, M 3 to M 12. The affordable basic outfit.
- P.V.14, 19 pieces including guides, M 3 to M 12.
- Left-hand threads, 19 pieces including guides, M 3 LH to M 12 LH.
- Set for electrical conduit, M 20 x 1.5 to M 25 x 1.5.
Why guides make the difference
An external thread goes crooked when the die tilts on starting, and that cannot be corrected later. A guide sits on the bolt and holds the die square until the first threads bite. What that looks like in practice is shown in Perfect external threads with die guides, clean cutting by hand in Cut external threads cleanly by hand using a die.
Single dies in every thread system are under round dies and hexagon die nuts, holders and guides under tool holders, sets including taps under assortments.
