Loosening a seized thread: What really works?

Seized threads are a regular occurrence in workshops, assembly and maintenance. A screw is stuck, turns only with difficulty or can no longer be moved at all after years of use. Rust is often the cause, sometimes dirt, damaged thread flanks or a connection that has gone too long without being loosened.

Why does a thread seize?

  • Corrosion caused by moisture, dirt and oxygen
  • Chips, old sealants, paint residue or oil deposits
  • Screws started at an angle
  • Excessive tightening torque
  • Missing or incorrect lubrication

  • Material combinations such as stainless steel or aluminium that can be prone to galling

This is particularly common with machines, vehicles, pumps, fixtures or outdoor components. If a connection is not loosened for an extended period, rust and deposits can become increasingly embedded in the threads.

Why is force the wrong approach?

When a screw is stuck, applying more force often seems like the obvious solution. A longer lever, a forceful jerk or using an impact wrench straight away may seem tempting at first. In practice, however, this often makes the damage worse.

This can happen:

  • The screw head becomes rounded

  • The component requires extensive repair

How do you loosen a seized thread correctly?

    Remove rust, dirt, chips or paint residue using a brush, compressed air or a suitable cleaner. The area where the screw meets the component is particularly important. This is where the penetrating oil must be able to enter later.

    Spray penetrating oil, meaning a low-viscosity oil such as WD-40 or similar products, directly into the gap between the screw and the thread. The more precisely the product reaches the connection, the more effectively it can penetrate the threads.

    For slightly stuck screws, a few minutes may be enough. For heavily corroded connections, a longer soaking time may be advisable.

  4. 4. Use the correct tool

    Use a correctly sized socket, box-end wrench or bit. The tool must fit securely. If it has any play, you will often damage the screw head faster than you loosen the connection.

  5. 5. Move it carefully

    When turning, do not jerk it. Move the screw carefully back and forth. Loosen it a little, turn it back a little, then loosen it again. This allows rust, dirt and deposits to gradually break free.

Can heat help with loosening?

Heat can help when rust or high friction is blocking the connection. Heating causes the material to expand slightly. In practice, the surrounding component is often heated so that the internal thread expands minimally. Penetrating oil can then be applied again and the screw moved carefully.

However, it is important to remember that heat is not suitable for every application. Caution is required with plastic parts, seals, paintwork, electronics, coated components or heat-sensitive materials. In such cases, heat should be applied only in a very controlled manner or not at all.

What happens after loosening?

Once the screw has been loosened, the work is not automatically finished. The thread should always be inspected. A new screw must turn easily, straight and evenly.

Pay particular attention to these signs:

  • The screw catches when being screwed in
  • The thread feels rough
  • The screw does not engage correctly

  • The connection can no longer be tightened securely
